About Oyo State Civil Service

The Oyo State Civil Service Commission was established in 1976 sequel to the creation of new States from the old Western State. The Commission on its own is a creation of Section 197 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) like all other States Civil Service Commission in the Federation.

It derives its power to make appointments, promotions and exercise disciplinary control over public servants from Section 202 of the same Constitution. The Constitution specifically emphasises that, in exercising its power to make appointment or to exercise disciplinary control over persons, the Commission shall not be subject to the direction or control of any authority or person.

Oyo State is one of the 36 states of Nigeria and is located in the southwestern part of the country. It was created in 1976 from the former Western State and originally included Osun State, which became a separate state in 1991. The state is named after the ancient Oyo Empire, one of the most prominent Yoruba kingdoms in history. The Oyo Empire rose to prominence in the 17th century and became the most powerful Yoruba kingdom until its decline in the 19th century.

The capital city of Oyo State is Ibadan, which is the largest city in West Africa by land area. Ibadan served as a vital military outpost for the British colonial forces during their expansion in the region. Today, the city remains a major cultural and economic hub, famous for its historical landmarks, educational institutions, and vibrant marketplaces.

Oyo State is known for its rich cultural heritage and significant contributions to Nigerian history. The state is home to various historical sites, including the Alaafin of Oyo’s palace, which serves as the traditional seat of power for the Yoruba people. Oyo’s traditional leadership played a crucial role in the formation of modern Nigeria, as many leaders from the state were actively involved in the independence movement and the early years of the nation’s development.

Agriculture is the mainstay of the state’s economy, with crops like cocoa, cashew, maize, and cassava being widely cultivated. The state also has a growing industrial sector, with manufacturing industries located mainly in Ibadan.

Over the years, Oyo State has developed into a vibrant region, blending its rich historical past with modern development. The state’s educational sector is robust, with notable institutions like the University of Ibadan, the Polytechnic of Ibadan, and other prominent schools contributing to Nigeria’s academic and research prowess.
